Firewood Moisture Is the Variable That Decides Your Creosote Load

Wet firewood is the single largest controllable cause of creosote buildup. How moisture content changes what forms in your flue, and how to season and store wood in a Chicagoland climate.

The variable most homeowners never measure

Most firewood advice sorts wood by species. Oak is better than pine, hickory burns longer, avoid softwoods. That ranking is real for heat output and burn time, and it is close to irrelevant for what happens inside your chimney.

The variable that decides your creosote load is water.

Freshly cut wood can be half water by weight. Before that wood can produce usable heat, the fire has to drive the water off as steam, and the energy for that comes out of the fire itself. The result is a fire that runs cooler and produces smoke at a lower temperature. Cool smoke moving up a flue is exactly the condition under which the tar and unburned volatiles in that smoke condense onto the flue wall rather than exiting the chimney.

That condensate is creosote. Once it accumulates, it becomes both the fuel and the ignition path for a chimney fire, and in its later glazed stages it stops responding to ordinary brushing.

The EPA’s Burn Wise guidance treats 20 percent moisture content as the practical ceiling for clean burning. That number is not about efficiency alone. It is the line above which you start meaningfully changing what accumulates in your flue between cleanings.

Why cooler smoke condenses

A chimney works by keeping combustion gases warm enough to stay buoyant until they leave the top. Everything about the system — flue sizing, liner condition, chimney height, whether the stack runs inside or outside the building envelope — exists to preserve that temperature long enough for the gases to escape. Wet fuel attacks that mechanism at the source. Instead of a hot, fast column of gas, you get a cooler, slower one. It lingers against the flue wall, and the wall is the coldest surface in the system. The volatiles condense there in the same way water beads on a cold window.

This is also why an exterior chimney on a north or west wall shows the effect first. That stack is already losing heat to the outside air, and in Chicagoland it spends the heating season doing so against genuinely cold ambient temperatures. The stages that condensate passes through, from light soot to hardened glaze, are laid out in chimney creosote stages. The short version is that the early stages sweep out easily and the late ones do not.

Seasoning in a Chicagoland climate

Seasoning is just controlled drying, and it takes longer here than most delivery schedules imply.

Split first. Bark is a moisture barrier and it works in both directions. A round left whole will hold water in its core for years. Splitting exposes end grain and open faces, which is where drying actually happens.

Stack off the ground. Pallets, rails, or purpose-built racks. Wood in direct ground contact wicks moisture back up and will not reach target no matter how long it sits.

Cover the top, leave the sides open. A tarp wrapped fully around a stack traps evaporating moisture and slows everything down. Cover the top surface against rain and snow, and let air move through the sides.

Give it a full season, usually more. Split hardwood generally needs a year in this climate. Dense oak often needs closer to two. Wood delivered in September for the fire you want to light in October has not been seasoned by you, and unless it was seasoned by the seller, it is not ready.

Do not trust appearance. Grey ends, checking, and bark falling away are weak signals. They correlate with age, not with moisture content, and a piece can look weathered on the outside while holding a wet core.

Just measure it

A firewood moisture meter is inexpensive and removes the entire argument.

Take a piece from the middle of your stack. Split it. Press the probes into the freshly exposed face, across the grain, near the centre of the piece. That reading is the one that matters — the outside face of a piece that has been sitting in the open will read dry regardless of what the core is doing.

Under 20 percent, burn it. Between 20 and 25, it will burn but you are adding to your flue. Above 25, you are producing creosote at a rate that will likely outpace an annual cleaning if you burn regularly.

Sample a few pieces from different parts of the stack rather than trusting one. Stacks dry unevenly, and the pieces in the middle are usually the wettest.

What to burn, and what never to

Any untreated, properly seasoned cordwood is acceptable. Density affects how long a load lasts and how much heat it gives, so hardwoods remain the practical choice for sustained heat, but a well-seasoned softwood is better for your flue than wet oak.

What should never enter a residential fireplace:

  • Treated, painted, or stained lumber
  • Plywood, MDF, particle board, or anything containing adhesives
  • Pallets, which are frequently chemically treated
  • Driftwood, which carries salt that attacks flue liners and masonry
  • Household rubbish, glossy paper, or plastics

These release compounds that are corrosive to the flue and unsafe to breathe. If your fireplace serves an insert or a stove, follow the manufacturer’s fuel specification as well — appliances are certified against a defined fuel, and burning outside that specification can affect both performance and any applicable warranty.

Never burn anything while unsure whether the flue is clear. Incomplete combustion in a blocked or restricted chimney is a carbon monoxide pathway, and CO is not detectable without an alarm. The CDC’s carbon monoxide guidance covers the exposure symptoms worth recognising.

What this changes about your cleaning schedule

The standard advice is an annual inspection, and that holds regardless of fuel quality — NFPA 211 sets the annual inspection standard for any chimney in service. What fuel quality changes is what the inspection finds and how often cleaning is actually needed between inspections.

A household burning well-seasoned wood a few evenings a week is on a very different accumulation curve from one burning damp wood as a primary heat source. Both need the annual inspection. If you know you burned wet wood last season, mention it when you book. It tells the technician to scan specifically for glazed deposits, which form under exactly these conditions and which change the scope of the work — glaze does not brush out the way ordinary soot does.

The decision

Before this heating season, do three things.

Measure what you already have, on a fresh split face, with a meter. If it reads above 20 percent, set it aside to season and source something drier for this winter rather than burning through it and paying for the consequences in your flue.

Start next year’s wood now. Split, stacked, off the ground, top covered, sides open. Wood you put up this autumn is wood you can trust next autumn.

Book the inspection regardless. Fuel quality changes the accumulation rate, not the need to look. A chimney cleaning service visit and an NFPA 211 inspection tell you where you actually stand before the first fire, which is the only point at which the information is still useful.

05 Can I burn construction scrap, pallets, or driftwood?
No. Treated, painted, glued, or salt-saturated wood releases compounds that damage the flue and are not safe to breathe. Manufactured or engineered wood products fall in the same category. Burn only untreated, seasoned cordwood, and follow the appliance manufacturer's fuel guidance for any insert or stove.
