If You Smell Gas, Do This First
Before anything else in this guide: if you smell gas near or from the fireplace, leave the building. Do not flip light switches, do not use your phone inside, and do not try to find the source yourself. Once you are outside at a safe distance, call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911. Do not go back inside until you are told it is safe to.
This is the one symptom in this guide that is not a diagnostic step. Everything else below assumes the building has already been confirmed safe.
What You Can Check Yourself Before Calling
Before scheduling a service call, four things are safe for a homeowner to check:
The gas shutoff valve position. Confirm the shutoff serving the fireplace is in the open position, not closed. A valve that was closed for a summer project, a cleaning, or by a household member unfamiliar with its purpose is a common and completely benign explanation for a unit that will not start.
The wall switch. Many gas fireplaces run on a switch, not just a remote. Confirm it is on, and if it sits on a switched outlet or circuit, confirm that circuit has power.
Remote batteries. Weak or dead batteries are one of the most common reasons a fireplace stops responding. Fresh batteries resolve a meaningful share of “the fireplace won’t turn on” calls before they become calls.
The pilot control setting. Confirm the control knob is set to the position the manufacturer specifies for operation rather than off. This is a visual check of the setting, not an instruction to relight the pilot or adjust the valve. If the pilot will not stay lit once it is in the correct position, that is a diagnosis question covered below, not something to keep retrying.

Pilot Won’t Light or Won’t Stay Lit
A standing pilot system uses a thermocouple, and an intermittent-pilot or electronic-ignition system uses a thermopile instead; both are small sensors that sit in the pilot flame, confirm the flame is present, and hold the main gas valve open on that signal. What that aging looks like in practice: the pilot lights normally, burns for a few seconds to a few minutes, and then the valve senses an insufficient signal and closes, extinguishing the flame. As the sensor weakens further, that window gets shorter. This is a part replacement and a realignment, not an adjustment a homeowner can make safely, and repeatedly re-igniting a pilot that will not hold does not solve the underlying sensor problem.
Igniter Clicks But Produces No Flame
Spark igniters and electronic ignition modules produce an audible click when they fire. A clicking sound means the igniter itself is working. No flame despite that click means gas is not reaching the electrode in a combustible mixture, and the cause sits upstream of the spark: a shutoff valve not fully open, a clogged pilot orifice, a gas valve that has failed to open, or, on propane systems, a tank that has run low. Continuing to click the igniter without result does not change any of those upstream conditions and is a signal to stop and call for service rather than keep trying.
Remote or Wall Switch Stopped Responding
Start with batteries, as covered above. If fresh batteries do not restore response, the next most common cause is the receiver module itself, whether that is a battery-powered receiver or one powered by the thermopile. Receivers can fail outright, lose their programming, or develop a wiring connection problem between the receiver and the valve. A hardwired wall switch that stopped working after fresh batteries and confirmed circuit power point to the switch or its wiring rather than the remote system. Either path is a control-system diagnosis for a technician, not a battery problem at that point.
Soot on the Glass and Blocked Burner Ports
A gas fireplace that is burning correctly produces a clean blue flame with little to no soot. Soot building up on the inside of the glass is a sign that combustion is not complete, and it is worth taking seriously rather than treating as a cleaning issue.
The most common cause is blocked burner ports. Dust, lint, and debris from the log set can accumulate in the small ports along the burner over years of use, restricting gas flow through individual ports and producing an uneven, sooting flame instead of a clean one. A misaligned log set that blocks airflow around the burner produces a similar result, as can a combustion air problem on the venting side. Incomplete combustion also produces more carbon monoxide as a byproduct, which is the main reason soot on the glass is a stop-and-inspect symptom rather than a wipe-and-continue one. Burner port cleaning is specialized work tied to the specific unit’s burner assembly and is not a DIY cleaning task.
Blower Noise or Failure
Many gas inserts and built-in units include a circulating blower that moves room air across the firebox to help distribute heat. On most units this blower is separate from the sealed combustion and venting system, so a blower problem does not by itself indicate a combustion or safety issue, but it will not resolve on its own.
Rattling, grinding, or a high-pitched whine usually points to bearing wear or debris that has entered the blower housing. A blower that does not run at all can mean a failed motor, a tripped limit switch, or a control board fault. A failing blower motor tends to get progressively louder before it quits rather than failing all at once, which makes the noise itself worth scheduling service for before it becomes a no-heat-distribution problem in the middle of winter.
Glass Door Gasket Wear
The seal between the glass panel and the firebox frame is a gasket, and like any gasket exposed to repeated heat cycling, it hardens, compresses, and eventually cracks over years of use. On a direct-vent unit, that seal is part of what keeps the combustion chamber sealed from room air, which is the basis of how direct-vent systems draw combustion air from outside and vent exhaust outside rather than exchanging air with the room.
Visible cracking, tearing, or a gasket that has come loose from the frame is worth flagging at your next service visit even if the fireplace still lights and runs normally, since a compromised seal on a sealed-combustion unit is a venting integrity question, not just a cosmetic one. Venting Faults on Direct-Vent Units
Direct-vent gas fireplaces route combustion exhaust and outside combustion air through a sealed vent system rather than exchanging air with the room. When that system develops a fault, the appliance’s own safety mechanisms often respond by shutting the unit down or preventing the pilot from holding, which is why some “won’t stay lit” complaints turn out to be venting problems rather than pilot sensor problems once a technician inspects them.
Common venting faults include a blocked termination cap, nesting material or snow at the exterior opening, and pipe seam separation inside the wall cavity from age or settling.
